Am I a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty in Milwaukee?
A rhinoplasty procedure has the ability to change a person’s entire look. It can restore balance and symmetry to your face offering great improvement with even the most subtle use of corrective surgery. Dr. Bosbous can address a number of concerns you may have with your nose, including the following:
- Size (too big, too small)
- Width (too thin, too wide)
- Symmetry
- Projection issues
- Unusual nostrils or nasal tip
- Overall appearance of profile
In addition to cosmetic issues, functional issues can also be addressed with a rhinoplasty procedure. With regard to a deviated septum, a curving of your septum may be making it difficult for you to sleep or even breathe. Dr. Bosbous is well qualified to help you with both your functional and cosmetic concerns and will partner with you to create a personalized surgical plan. These topics will be discussed during a confidential and complimentary consultation.
The Rhinoplasty Procedure
Rhinoplasty surgery is performed on an outpatient basis. Patients will arrive for surgery at their scheduled time and be allowed to return home once the primary effects of anesthesia have worn off. Patients are given detailed recovery instructions to follow to ensure a healthy recovery period.
Rhinoplasty is often performed under general anesthesia, but can sometimes be accomplished using a combination of local anesthesia and a sedative. Dr. Bosbous will discuss your anesthesia options with you during your consultation to ensure that you are comfortable throughout the entire process.
Rhinoplasty Incisions
Patients generally have two distinct options for rhinoplasty procedures:
- Open Rhinoplasty: During an open rhinoplasty, an incision is made along the columella–that piece of tissue between the nostrils. Once the incision is made, the overlying tissue is manipulated to give greater access to the interior workings of the nose. During an open rhinoplasty, Dr. Bosbous has a great deal of latitude and flexibility in terms of making changes to the overall shape, structure, and function of the nose.
- Closed Rhinoplasty: During a closer rhinoplasty, a small incision is made within the nostril. All of the work performed on the nose is then performed through this small incision. Significant changes can still be made with a closed rhinoplasty, and the relatively small incisions can often promote a faster recovery period.
During your consultation with Dr. Bosbous, you’ll discuss whether an open or closed rhinoplasty will better meet your desired results. Generally speaking, an open rhinoplasty is more appropriate when the patient wants significant changes, and a closed rhinoplasty is a better option when the patient wants only modest alterations to the nose.
But the desirability of these options will vary from patient to patient, so it’s very important to be transparent about the final outcomes you envision. You can discuss all incision options with Dr. Bosbous during your consultation.
Once the incisions are made (in either procedure) the skin and soft tissue will be elevated, allowing Dr. Bosbous to access and modify your nose’s deep structure. Following the adjustment to the bone and cartilage, the skin and soft tissue will then drape over the new framework and the rhinoplasty is complete. Dr. Bosbous understands that each patient is unique. During your consultation he will explain in detail the specific adjustments that will be required to address your individual concerns and partner with you to develop a surgical plan that will help you achieve your goals and expectations.
Rhinoplasty Recovery and Results
Dr. Bosbous will make every effort to minimize complications and provide a natural appearing result. Internal splints/tubes may be put in place along with an external splint on top of the nose to protect your nose during the early healing process. You may experience initial swelling and bruising, but this should subside over the course of a few weeks allowing you to resume social activity. Patients of best rhinoplasty surgery in the milwaukee area who are under the care of Dr. Bosbous can expect to enjoy their final result within 6-8 months of their rhinoplasty surgery.
Patients are given very detailed and personalized information regarding their rhinoplasty recovery throughout the process, and will regularly check in with Dr. Bosbous during that recovery period. For the first week or so after your rhinoplasty procedure, you may be required to wear a nasal splint, designed to safeguard your nose and your results.
Patients may also encounter significant bruising and swelling in the first days to weeks after their nose job procedure. It may take several weeks for this swelling to subside to the point where patients can begin to evaluate the new size and shape of their noses.
Depending on the nature of your rhinoplasty procedure, residual, low level swelling may linger for around six months. Only when this residual swelling has subsided can patients evaluate their final rhinoplasty results (although big changes to the nose may be obvious well before then).
Rhinoplasty Results
Nose reshaping surgery is capable of generating a wide variety of different results. However, the primary purpose for most patients is to make the nose appear more aesthetically pleasing, especially in balance with the dynamics of the rest of the face. It’s vital that rhinoplasty surgery take into account the other features of the face, and the way all of those features work together.
Aesthetically, some of the common results achieved by rhinoplasty often includes a straighter nose or a more aesthetically pleasing angle to the nose. In many cases, the nose is made larger or smaller (sometimes including the cartilage). The size and shape of the nostrils can also be altered.
Most patients who undergo rhinoplasty report a significant improvement in confidence and self-esteem afterwards. They also report feeling as though their nose draws substantially less attention–an effect nearly all rhinoplasty patients wish to achieve.
