Three Liposuction Questions to Think About
Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed aesthetic plastic surgery procedures available, in no small part because lipo provides patients with a wide variety of options. There are certainly more than three liposuction questions to think about as you plan your procedure in consultation with Dr. Bosbous, but it never hurts to start the process early.
What is Liposuction and What Does it Do?
That’s why we’re discussing three questions to think about before your liposuction. These questions won’t apply to every single patient, and they are not intended to be a form of diagnostic. Instead, they’re simply intended to start you on the path to thinking about what you want from the procedure and how you might get there.
If you want to know more about how a liposuction procedure might work for you individually, contact our offices to schedule a confidential consultation with Dr. Bosbous. This consultation is intended to answer all of your questions about the procedure you might be interested in. Every liposuction transformation begins with the consultation process.
Three Liposuction Questions to Think About
The following three liposuction questions are intended to promote some early thinking about your liposuction procedure. Because liposuction is so versatile–used either individually or in combination with other surgical procedures–there are many possible ways that liposuction could address your concerns.
Question #1: What Part of Your Body do You Want to Contour?
Because liposuction is minimally invasive, it can be employed across the body. The vast majority of patients want to eliminate excess fat from the abdominal area, but it’s certainly not the only part of the body that can be contoured by lipo.
Patients often wish to address areas such as
- Arms
- Thighs
- Lower legs
- Arms
- Back
- Neck
- Face
The sheer volume of areas that can be treated can sometimes overwhelm patients. Patients are usually counseled to consider two things:
- Those areas which produce the most distress, either physically or emotionally, are often the best candidates for the most immediate treatments.
- Patients should also consider how well their preferred target area may be contoured with the rest of the body in order to produce the most natural looking liposuction results possible.
The most common way to determine where you should get liposuction is ultimately pretty straightforward: most patients will target liposuction on those areas that they are the most unhappy with in terms of their overall figure.
Question #2: Are You a Stable Weight?
For various reasons, many patients come into our offices under the impression that they need to be down to their ideal weight in order to undergo a liposuction procedure. And that’s not entirely true. (Although it is important that all patients are healthy enough for a surgical procedure.)
What’s important for liposuction is that patients are a stable weight. There are several reasons for this, but the most important reasons have to do with preserving your results. If patients are in the process of losing weight when they undergo liposuction, they may end up with a certain amount of excess skin by the end of the process. Conversely, if patients gain weight after liposuction, their overall results might diminish.
When you’re a stable weight for your liposuction procedure, you help ensure the best possible results. The results of the liposuction will be carefully contoured to your body so your results will look as natural as possible.
Question #3: Do You Need a Tummy Tuck Too?
Many patients want volume removed specifically from the abdomen–or, more colloquially, from the tummy. Liposuction is a great way to accomplish this. But as with any weight loss, whether achieved naturally or through the assistance of liposuction, patients may be left with excess skin in the process.
That’s why liposuction of the abdomen is often paired with a tummy tuck procedure. During a tummy tuck, Dr. Bosbous will remove excess skin from the belly and add structure to the abdominal muscles. Essentially this will make the abdomen look firmer and fitter.
And a tummy tuck can also amplify your liposuction results. Excess skin can look a lot like excess fat, so many patients who are interested in liposuction of the abdomen will schedule a concurrent tummy tuck procedure in order to achieve the greatest possible transformation. This will not be necessary or desired for every liposuction patient, but it is a quite common coupling.
The Right Liposuction Procedure for Your Body
The purpose of any liposuction procedure, ultimately, is to help you look and feel your best. Patients who are bothered by stubborn areas of fat can use liposuction to contour their bodies into a more desirable shape. Modern liposuction is able to achieve precision contouring, so your results will blend right in with your body.
That’s true whether you’re interested in liposuction of the abdomen or lipo around the back or face. The recovery period for this procedure usually means taking a few days off of work followed by a few weeks of taking things easy physically. For areas of fat that don’t respond to diet, exercise, or lifestyle changes, liposuction is a great way to get the contours and curves (or angles) you want.
