Labiaplasty: A Popular Procedure

Patients often pursue aesthetic plastic surgery because they are interested in becoming more comfortable with the size, shape, and feel of their bodies. This is true whether the procedure in question is a facelift or breast augmentation. And this remains true when the procedures turn to something like labiaplasty, a surgery that some women pursue in order to alter the size and shape of the labia. Along with other vaginal rejuvenation procedures, labiaplasty is an increasingly popular aesthetic plastic surgery procedure, and satisfaction among patients of this procedure is exceptionally high.

Why Labiaplasty?

Many patients who are considering labiaplasty are currently unhappy with the size or shape of their labia minora. Often, the labia minora is expanded or stretched out during childbirth or simply through aging. Other times, the labia minora size is determined by simple genetics. When the labia minora is overly large, it can often cause a high degree of discomfort. Some patients notice this when working out, for example, in the form of unwelcome chaffing or ill fitting clothing. Other patients are simply discomforted by the notion that their labia minora does not conform to more traditional appearances.

Indeed, according to a 2008 study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, roughly a third of the women who underwent labiaplasty did so to correct a functional impairment, a third for aesthetic reasons, and a third for some combination of both motivations. It’s likely those numbers have changed over the years, but it provides a general sense of what motivates many women to undergo labiaplasty procedures.

Whatever the reason for the discomfort, labiaplasty is designed to mitigate that discomfort and restore the labia minora to a more streamlined, youthful-looking appearance. This is accomplished by eliminating excess tissue and, in some cases, rearranging the remaining tissue in order to generate the desired results. In some cases, labiaplasty may be combined with a Labia Majora Fat Graft procedure, which is designed to increase the size and volume of the labia majora. The desired end results are typically a more youthful looking vaginal area. Most of the women who seek out vaginal rejuvenation in Milwaukee with Dr. Bosbous end up thrilled with the final results and thankful for the special expertise Dr. Bosbous brings to this set of procedures.

Am I a Good Candidate for Labiaplasty in Milwaukee?

Vaginal rejuvenation procedures can be particularly sensitive, especially when it comes to patients’ willingness to discuss the procedure. Dr. Bosbous encourages an atmosphere of openness and honesty in all of his consultations with candidates.

The best candidates for labiaplasty will exhibit or consider these characteristics:

  • Your labia minora has excess tissue
  • The excess tissue in your labia makes you uncomfortable
  • Your labia minor tissue has been expanded, for example, through child birth
  • You have realistic expectations about what this procedure can accomplish
  • You are generally healthy enough for surgery
  • You have and likely will continue to maintain a stable weight

You should also come to every consultation ready to discuss your medical history and your desired final results.

The Procedure

Labiaplasty is generally performed on an outpatient basis under local or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the work and on the preferences of the patient and surgeon. During your consultation with Dr. Bosbous, you will discuss your desired results and the best way to achieve those results. During the procedure itself, excess labia tissue will be removed. Depending on the results you’re looking to achieve, this may include reduction in tissue of the clitoral hood.

There are several different techniques employed in labiaplasty procedures, each with their own advantages and challenges. It’s important that you discuss these techniques with Dr. Bosbous, so that he can help ensure that you get the results you desire.

Once the procedure is complete, you should be able to return home the same day.

Results and Recovery

Recovery from labiaplasty is usually relatively swift. As mentioned above, you should be able to return home on the same day as your procedure. Pain after surgery is usually minimal. Some women choose to wear a sanitary pad for comfort reasons. The labia minor itself may be quite swollen immediately following your procedure, and so it may actually appear to be larger than it was previously, but this swelling will subside within 4-6 weeks, depending on the extent of the work performed (for example, procedures that include clitoral hood reduction may require more time to diminish swelling).

You should be able to resume normal activities after a couple of days, though you will need to avoid excessive activity (for example, exercise) for several weeks in order to promote proper healing.

Once the swelling subsides, results should be apparent. Most women will be able to notice those results simply through the way they experience the feeling of clothes or undergarments.
