What Causes Hyperhidrosis?
It’s estimated that 7.8 million Americans suffer from Hyperhidrosis. Usually, people notice excess sweating hands, feet, face, or armpits. The causes of this excess sweating can vary considerably from person to person. Some of the most common causes include:
- Issues with your thyroid
- Changes in your blood sugar (particularly low blood sugar)
- Infections could cause temporary hyperhidrosis
- Menopause
- Diabetes
- Certain prescription medications
- Unknown causes
In cases where the cause of hyperhidrosis is known, treating the underlying issues can often clear up the excessive sweating. However, it’s not uncommon for chronic hyperhidrosis to develop and persist for unknown reasons. These are usually cases of what’s known as idiopathic hyperhidrosis. In these cases, treating the underlying cause is impossible. Instead, we can then focus on treating the symptom itself: the excessive sweating.
Dr. Bosbous offers both surgical and non surgical treatments for excessive sweating. Which treatment is best for you will depend on your physiology, your preferences, and the extent of your sweating. In some cases, both surgical and non surgical treatments may be applied in order to achieve the best results possible.
Can Hyperhidrosis Cause Discomfort?
At first, hyperhidrosis can sound like a trivial concern. Excessive sweating doesn’t sound like something that will necessarily heavily impact your quality of life. That perspective changes, however, when you start living with hyperhidrosis. That’s because hyperhidrosis can cause several major issues and lead to ongoing discomfort.
Excessive sweating can cause:
- Skin irritation: The excess moisture can cause the skin to become irritated. This irritation can even lead to infections and other complications.
- Clamminess of skin: Evaporation of sweat can cause the skin to feel cold and clammy.
- Sweat that soaks through clothing: Hyperhidrosis can be difficult to hide or explain away when you’re constantly sweating through your clothing. This can be exceptionally frustrating and dispiriting for patients.
- Social consequences: There can be significant social consequences created by hyperhidrosis. You may start to withdraw from your friends and family. It’s possible you could even start to feel depressed.
- Body odor: You may begin to worry about the prevalence of your body odor.
- Avoiding contact: In many cases, hyperhidrosis might cause you to start avoiding physical contact with other people. This could impact both your social life and your job prospects.
Given the discomfort that hyperhidrosis can cause, it quickly becomes apparent why some patients would like to address their excess sweating.
Once your hyperhidrosis treatment has been completed, you’ll likely notice that you begin to sweat significantly less often. When you sweat less, your skin feels more comfortable. You won’t have to worry about sweating through your clothing or linger body odor smells that might cling to your wardrobe.
The Hyperhidrosis Treatments
There are several options for the treatment of excessive sweating. Below are some of the procedures/treatments that Dr. Bosbous will discuss with you during your one-on-one consultation:
BOTOX® Injections:
BOTOX® has been FDA approved for the treatment of excessive sweating in the underarms, feet and hands. Some discomfort may result from the injections, so IV sedation may be used during the procedure. Patients should know this is not a permanent treatment and will need to be repeated every 4-6 months.
Surgery for Excessive Sweating:
Dr. Bosbous is pleased to offer his patients the axillary shaving procedure for the treatment of excessive sweating. The surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure and takes approximately 1 hour to complete. By making small incisions hidden in the underarm crease, Dr. Bosbous can access the sweat glands under the skin. The identified area will then be treated with a specialized shaving technique which removes the glands, and in many cases dramatically reduces or eliminates the amount the underarm perspires. Underarm hair follicles are generally unaffected by the procedure.
Following Your Surgical Procedure
Initial recovery time for this procedure is typically 5 days. Patients will have special dressing and a small postoperative drain put in place after surgery that will be removed after a few days. Dr. Bosbous advises his patients to avoid vigorous activity and exercise for several weeks after surgery.
Hyperhidrosis Treatment Results
Patients who have been treated for hyperhidrosis and successfully see their sweating curtailed will often speak of significant boosts to their confidence and self-esteem. Whether you undergo a surgical or non surgical hyperhidrosis treatment, the results should be noticeable in relatively short order.
In some cases, you may stop sweating in the treated area all together. In other cases, your sweating will diminish significantly. Your dryer skin will leave you feeling relieved–you won’t have to think about your sweating skin anymore!
