Common Reasons for Patients to Undergo Rhinoplasty
The so-called “nose job” is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures year after year, consistently holding its place among the top-five. In fact, rhinoplasty is so popular that it’s worth taking some time to examine some of the more prominent motivations that might drive patients to surgery. For many, there’s comfort in knowing that they aren’t alone in what they’re feeling, especially when it comes to transforming the nose.
There Are Many Reasons to Undergo Rhinoplasty
Contrary to popular belief, the vast majority of plastic surgery patients have a relatively positive body image and pretty high self-esteem. They simply want to address one or two (often subtle) issues that present roadblocks to achieving their desired body image.
When it comes to the nose, those issues can be both slight and profound. It all depends on the nose and on the way your nose interacts with the rest of the face. It’s also important to note that rhinoplasty motivations are not monolithic. Many patients have a multiplicity of feelings and desires that drive them to surgery. At the end of the day, most of those patients want something specific about the nose addressed and corrected.
Ratios and Proportions of the Face
For many patients, the desire to change the nose is actually rooted in how other areas of the face are perceived. The nose, after all, has a significant role to play in the proportions of the face, largely due to its central location. A nose at a crooked angle, for example, can make one side of the face look asymmetrical to the other.
Perhaps an even better example is what sometimes happens when a patient is suffering from a drooping tip, a condition in which the tip of the nose has an exaggerated downward droop. These patients often complain that their drooping tips end up making their smiles appear sinister. The position of the nose interferes with the expression they intend to convey.
Needless to say, this can be immensely frustrating for patients. The inability to properly express an intended emotion is one of the most common motivations for patients who want to undergo a rhinoplasty procedure. They want the nose to interfere less.
When The Nose Draws Too Much Attention
If the nose isn’t interfering with one’s emotional expressions, the problem may be in how much attention the nose is garnering. When you talk about any particular face’s defining characteristic–how you might remember someone–the nose rarely comes up first. Usually it’s the eyes, sometimes it’s the mouth, and so on.
When the nose is off kilter or out of proportion in some way, it can draw far too much attention to itself. Sometimes a bump in the bridge or an awkward angle in the orientation can be all that people see or remember of your nose, and that can make patients uncomfortable with the way their noses look.
A rhinoplasty procedure performed by Dr. Bosbous is careful to take the proportions of the face into account when planning the final look. That’s because the nose is, from an aesthetic perspective, interacting with all of the other elements of the face. So it takes special care and attention to ensure that the nose blends in with the rest of the face.
Is Rhinoplasty the Right Option?
Whether rhinoplasty is the right way to transform your nose will depend on what your goals and expectations are (as well as your overall health). Nose reshaping surgery is both versatile and adept at transforming the nose. There are two major ways in which this is accomplished:
- Closed Rhinoplasty: This rhinoplasty technique makes a small incision near the septum. Dr. Bosbous will then use this incision as an entry point in order to make any changes to the nose.
- Open Rhinoplasty: An open rhinoplasty will also make an incision near the septum, although this incision will be a bit more substantial. The tissue of the nose will then be manipulated in order to gain easy access to all the internal working of the nose, allowing Dr. Bosbous to reshape various areas.
An open rhinoplasty is the rhinoplasty technique most often employed when patients want big and bold changes. A closed rhinoplasty is typically used when patients are more interested in small changes to the nose. Generally speaking, closed rhinoplasty procedures will have a shorter recovery window, but open rhinoplasty can accomplish more, so selective the right technique will often come down the results you desire.
Rhinoplasty does have a reputation for a relatively long recovery period, in part because your nose is so sensitive. If you have questions about rhinoplasty recovery, talk to Dr. Bosbous during your consultation.
Varied Motivations
There are many motivations that we have yet to touch on. For example, it’s quite common for patients who have broken their noses in the past to desire a reconstructive rhinoplasty procedure. This reconstructive rhinoplasty is intended to return the nose to its original, unbroken shape.
Whatever your motivations might be, there is likely a rhinoplasty solution for you. If you want to know more about rhinoplasty and “nose job” procedures, contact our offices to schedule a confidential consultation with Dr. Bosbous today!
