Five Breast Augmentation Questions to Think About

Five Breast Augmentation Questions to Think About

In terms of raw numbers, breast augmentation procedures are incredibly popular. Over 200,000 breast augmentation procedures were performed in the United States in 2015 alone. The final numbers for breast augmentations in 2016 will likely be quite similar. This isn’t necessarily surprising—this procedure is incredibly popular because of the great results it gets for patients.

Before getting a breast augmentation, however, most patients have to think about a series of options. After all, this procedure is designed to be highly customizable, generating individualized results for each patient. The more options you have, the better you can get the results that you’re after.

The best way to answer those questions is to schedule a confidential consultation with Dr. Bosbous. During that consultation, we’ll discuss the best way to achieve the results that you’re after. In the mean time, we can preview some of the questions you’ll need to think about when it comes to your breast augmentation.

Question Number 1: What Are Your Motivations?

As long as the motivations are yours, then there is really no such thing as good or bad motivations. However, it’s important to emphasize the part where the motivations are yours. No one should ever get plastic surgery due to pressure from a spouse or family member or to achieve someone else’s ideal body.

When the motivations are your own, they can definitely inform the overall course of your procedures. Some patients want to improve self-esteem and confidence. Other patients want to make their proportions more aesthetically pleasing. Whatever the case, the motivations of the patient is an important part of the overall process, so it’s worth thinking about what, exactly, your motivation for getting breast augmentation is.

Question Number 2: What Size Do You Want?

The next thing most patients should think about is, what size implants do you want? In most cases, implants are measured in cubic centimeters (also known as cc). This is simply a measure of volume. Patients will usually select an implant size in conjunction with Dr. Bosbous and according to their desired final results.

The size of the breast implants can make a big impact in terms of those final results. The most common breast implant size is 400cc (followed closely by 350cc and 450cc). The need for implants larger than 450cc is quite rare. However, the best size for you will likely be relative to the proportions of your body. This will depend largely on your current breast size and what size you feel will complete your look.

In some cases, it may be able to “test out” your new breast size with a specially made bra (one that houses the implants of your choice). It’s not an exact simulation, but it should give you a sense of the weight of your implants.

Question Number 3: What Shape Do You Want?

Not only do patients need to consider the size of their implants, but they must also consider the shape of their implants. In general, breast implants come in two basic shapes:

  • Round Implants: The most common choice for patients is a round breast implant. There are several advantages to this implant type. First and foremost, round implants are free to rotate (as sometimes happens) without the need for correction later.
  • Teardrop Shape: While the teardrop shape may seem, at first glance, to produce results that look more natural, this isn’t always the case. (Round implants can produce natural-looking results.) Teardrop Shape implants are, however, a good choice for patients who do not already have adequate breast tissue.

Of course, every patient is different, and the only way to know for sure what breast implant shape is the right fit for you is to schedule a complimentary consultation with Dr. Bosbous.

Question Number 4: What Implant Type Do You Want?

This is perhaps the most common question that patients have thought about: what implant type should you get? While all implant types can get great results for patients, the best implant for you will depend on your body and your desired final results. The two most common implant types are:

  • Saline Implant: Saline is, essentially, salt water. A saline breast implant was designed as an alternative to silicone implants. The advantage of these implants is often in their flexibility (a saline implant can be inserted flat and then filled with saline later).
  • Silicone Implant: The most common implant type used by surgeons today is the silicone implant. These implants usually demonstrate superior results, both in terms of the longevity of the implant and in how natural the implant looks and feels. Silicone implants are the number one choice among breast augmentation patients.

As always, your implant type will largely depend on your desired final results and the best way to achieve them. Dr. Bosbous will develop an individualized plan just for you in order to get you the best possible results.

Question Number 5: Have You Planned for Recovery?

One of the most important questions that patients should consider is, have you sufficiently planned for your recovery period? Most breast augmentation patients need at least a couple of days to get back on their feet and a week or two to get back to normal activities. This means that patients are encouraged to plan ahead and schedule some support during their recovery.

Patients will often get help taking care of basic household chore and preparing food and meals. Additionally, many patients will take a few days off of work to focus on recuperating. The point is that the better your plans are, the more smoothly your recovery will go. Dr. Bosbous gives every patient an individualized recovery plan designed to maximize comfort and protect your results.
