What is a Breast Revision, and When Do You Need One?

If you’re unhappy with the current shape or size of your breasts, you’ve probably researched the various procedures that are available to correct these issues to create your ideal figure. This could be your first time considering breast-related surgery, or you may have previously undergone an augmentation or reduction.

During your research, you might have come across the term “breast revision.” However, given just how many different breast procedures there are, you may be confused about what makes this type of procedure different from others that are available — and whether or not this is the right procedure to give you the look that you want.

At our Milwaukee, Wisconsin offices, we’ve helped countless people alter different aspects of their breasts to reach their ideal form. In this piece, we’ll break down when someone might want to consider a breast revision, what makes breast revision different from other procedures, and the steps someone should take before moving forward with the procedure.

What is Breast Revision?

To put it simply, breast revision surgery is a specialized procedure designed to correct congenital breast abnormalities or address issues from prior breast surgeries.

There are multiple reasons why one might consider breast revision surgery, reasons which can be broken down into two categories.

The first category is “primary breast revision.” This type of breast revision surgery focuses on fixing issues stemming from congenital breast abnormalities.

For example, a patient may enter our clinic for a breast revision surgery to fix asymmetry between the breasts. Alternatively, they may seek to correct a tuberous breast deformity, where breasts appear narrow or tube-like rather than round and full.

Other reasons one might seek primary breast revision include having inverted nipples, where a nipple projects into the breast rather than protruding outwards, or having enlarged areolas, where one seeks to reduce the size of their areolas through surgery.

The second category is “secondary breast revision.” Secondary breast revision addresses concerns that arise after a prior breast surgery, such as an augmentation, lift, reduction, or reconstruction.

While most breast surgeries performed by skilled surgeons don’t require correction, there can be issues that would push one to consider a secondary breast revision.

For example, while breast implants are incredibly durable, there is a small possibility that an implant can rupture. In cases like these, one might seek a secondary breast revision to replace the implant. One may also seek to simply exchange their current breast implants, swapping saline and silicone implants or switching sizes.

Other issues that can lead one to seek a secondary breast revision include capsular contracture, where the scar tissue around an implant has tightened and caused discomfort or deformity, and simply being unhappy with the results of a previous breast surgery.

Why Are Breast Revisions Different from Other Breast Procedures?

Given just how varied the conditions inspiring a breast revision can be, it should come as no surprise that solving these issues also requires a variety of techniques.

This is what sets breast revision apart from other procedures. While a breast augmentation typically involves only the addition of implants, a breast revision can involve a host of different procedures, including multiple procedures simultaneously.
